The War is on the Kitchen Table
the war is on the kitchen table
Myrna Garanis the war is on the kitchen table the war is on the kitchen table waiting to be read, I brew the coffee black as buildings, charred, collapsed, I load the toast with butter, chew my way through cluster bombs, smear raspberry jam on screaming headlines which do not disappear I flip the page to guaranteed results: hockey scores, ice dance competitions, there the gains and losses line up in soldierly columns, no wavering parades of souls, filing down disfigured roads, walking, falling, left behind, long after the page is closed |
This poem emphasises that the over reporting of war, in this case daily in newspapers, has made war as mundane as the act of making breakfast. The soldiers are no longer remembered as people, as individuals who belong to families and have hopes and plans for their lives. They have become numbers in a battle which is less significant to civilians than sports results. Yet the soldiers are individual humans who fight, are wounded and killed in a real war. Their lives and their families are affected.
Natural – refers to the weapon formed from natural product, in this case wood History – refers to events (usually significant) which affect people, in this case the events are creation of something (“made”), life, and death in war (“grave-side”) Armed conflict – refers to weapons carried by people and used in a war which inevitably resulted in death the = use of the definite article specifies a particular subject, i.e. specific wood, specific weapon, specific war, specific human’s death. It emphasises the deliberate acts of making a weapon and killing someone. and = use of the conjunction emphasises that this never ends, there is a series of events, each one occurring almost as an afterthought, but each one worse than the one before. There is a sense of the cycle of life and death, making weapons and fighting in war. Internal rhyme = eg bow/arrow emphasises the repetitive act of war Juxtaposition = tree, killed in first line but living in last (to create shade), contrasted with man, living in first line (to create weapon) but dead in last |
